George Lucas retires PDF Print E-mail

The movie industry lost one of the biggest forces in Hollywood when George Lucas announced his retirement from making blockbuster movies on Jan. 17.

“I’m retiring. I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff,” Lucas said during an interview with Bryan Curtis in the New York Times.

Lucas, the director of the Star Wars saga and the Indiana Jones movie series, has been entertaining the masses with his movies for about 40 years.

With the creation of his latest movie about the Tuskegee Airmen, Red Tails, George Lucas discussed his frustrations on how difficult it was to get the movie financed during an interview on The Daily Show.

“We finished it, I financed it myself and I figured I could get the prints and ads paid for by the studios and that they would release it. I showed up to all of them and they said, ‘No, we don’t know how to market a movie like this,’” Lucas said.

“It’s because it’s an all black movie. There’s no major white roles in it at all. It’s one of the first all black action pictures ever made,” Lucas said.

Lucas even goes on to discuss how Hollywood studios would turn him down because of the movie’s lack of foreign market appeal.

“It is difficult to hear you discuss this movie in the pure economic and political realities of it getting made,” said The Daily Show host John Stewart.

Some students on the Georgia Southern University campus believe that George Lucas should continue to make big blockbuster movies for the general public.

“I think he should stay in the movie business for a little longer. I mean, he has the potential to make more really good movies, so why stop now?” sophomore sports management major Darrin Miles said.

Other students, however, believe that George Lucas has already contributed enough to the movie industry and society as a whole.

“I think he (George Lucas) has the right to retire whenever he wants. No matter how many movies he makes, he’ll always be known to me as the ‘Star Wars Guy’,” freshman electrical engineering major Chris Smith said.

Just because Lucas is no longer creating blockbuster movies does not mean he is leaving the movie scene altogether. Instead, Lucas has decided to stick to smaller, more personal films that are normally screened in small art houses.

Even though Lucas stated he is retiring from the movie business, he did mention during the interview with John Stewart on The Daily Show that there is going to be a sequel and a prequel for his latest movie Red Tails.

While seemingly in good spirits during The Daily Show interview, it was obvious that Lucas looked exhausted. Whether his tired appearance was attributed to the amount of work it took to create the movie, or the hassle and frustration of dealing with the production studios.

Although the curtains are falling on Lucas’ career as a blockbuster movie director, he will always be known as one of the most iconic film directors in the movie business.
