Georgia Southern University’s Office of Student Leadership and Civil Engagement announced its spring speakers to be Dr. Reza Aslan and Jessica Jackley. The husband and wife team will be giving a lecture on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Russell Union Ballroom. Aslan is a world renowned author and religious scholar, the founder of Aslan Media Initiative and author of the world-wide bestseller, No god but God: The Origins, Evolution and Future of Isla, according to an e-mail from Jodi Middleton, assistant director of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. Aslan Media Initiative strives to inform, educate and entice the public in political, social, religious and cultural issues related to the Greater Middle East and Diaspora Communities worldwide, according to the e-mail. Aslan Media Initiative also uses new media and social media outlets to educate the public, according to Middleton. Jackley is the co-founder of Kiva, the Revolutionary Microlending Website. He is a former CMO and assisted Kiva in reaching over 750,000 lenders, 400,000 entrepreneurs and millions of supporters in more than 206 countries, all while her marketing budget was non-existent, according to the e-mail. Alsan and Jackley will be giving the lecture “The Promise and Peril of Social Media” on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Russell Union ballroom.
