The 2012 Student Government Association elections are rapidly approaching, and as the Elections Committee Chairman, I felt compelled to express the significance of the student electoral process.  The Elections Committee is working diligently to advertise and promote the election events on campus. However, the students are responsible for participating and electing the next generation of student leaders at GSU.

Applications are complete and candidates are attending mandatory meetings to become familiar with campaign and election guidelines. Campaigning officially begins on Friday, Feb. 24, at 12 a.m.

There are multiple opportunities for students to gather information on the candidates running for office. Students can access biographies and pictures of each candidate running for office beginning Feb. 24 by visiting www.georgiasouthernsga.com.

Additionally, the candidates’ debate takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room, and it serves as a platform for candidates to make their positions known and answer any concerns from the student body. The debate will be an exciting event and the committee is incorporating innovative techniques to make the debate as productive and enjoyable as possible. Students are encouraged to bring questions because they will be integrated into the program.

The voting window begins on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 9 p.m. Students can simply log onto their WINGS account to access the ballot.  Voting will end on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 9 p.m., and the elections results will be announced at the Elections Party in the Russell Union Commons on Thursday, March 1, at 12 p.m.

SGA serves as the liaison between the students and the administration. The people who are elected will represent the voice of the student body. It is our duty to actively participate in the electoral process and select individuals who embody the values of our university. Who are the future student leaders of GSU?
